The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department was recently awarded a $300,000 Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund to install green roof systems on several fire stations throughout the District. The Aqualok panels from Freedom Garden Products help reduce runoff and lower energy costs. Specially engineered pores allow plant roots to breathe when roof material is saturated, while energy-efficient panels insulate and provide a cool/white emissivity. Engine Company 12 installed 35,000 sf of panels, supporting cost-effective practices to reduce nutrient and sediment pollution to Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
