Bainbridge Island welcomes high-performance, sustainable elementary school

Bainbridge Island, Wash., off the coast of Seattle, is getting a new elementary school. Currently under construction on the northeastern part of the island, Wilkes Elementary School will adhere to high-performance, sustainable design standards while reducing operating and maintenance costs. The 63,000-sf, $23 million school will feature an administration wing and four classroom wings; the latter will each house 20 classrooms, including three kindergarten rooms and a room for developmental and special needs children. The Building Team of Mahlum Architects, Spee West (construction), 20-20 (civil engineer), and PCS (structural engineer) will construct the five wings to extend out over common-use areas. A music room and 5,040-sf gymnasium round out the design.
