New Walter Reed medical center garners LEED Gold

M.C. Dean provided design-build services for the $826 million Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, earning it LEED Gold certification. The 560,000-sf, six-story America Building, in Bethesda, Md., is the largest outpatient medical facility in the military health system. In addition to the existing hospital, the 165,000-sf Arrowhead building helped upgrade the center from the originally intended LEED Silver.

Onsite waste reduction and energy-efficient electrical power, lighting, grounding, telecommunications, security, and fire alarm systems comprise the newly overhauled facilities. More than 80% of the overhead conduit was produced in a prefabrication facility, helping to divert 89% of materials and waste from landfills.
