A tensile roofing project for La Plata Stadium in Argentina is complete, armoring the soccer pitch with fabric capable of withstanding temperatures from -100?F to 450?F. The 312,545-sf roofing system uses Birdair steel cables and Teflon-coated fiberglass membranes to provide a waterproof and UV- and flame-resistant barrier for the 53,000-seat stadium.
Designed by architect Roberto Ferreira and Weidlinger Associates, the stadium, which originally opened in 2003. is the first PTFE-covered center in South America. The roof was formed using tensioned steel cable hoops, featuring a figure-eight shape at the opening to resist global distortion.
