Sun controls protect financial center in Myrtle Beach

The First Federal Financial Center’s new 23,000-sf location in Myrtle Beach, S.C., uses nonlinear sun controls to protect against UV exposure. In a climate characterized by high temperatures and humidity, the Building Team of ESD Architecture and Hill Construction chose the sun controls to shade windows and curtain walls from intense sunrays, reducing energy use.

Projecting more than five feet from two upper-level floors, the sun controls cast uninterrupted sight and shadow lines, while matching aluminum fascia complements the building’s façade. Aluminum airfoil blades combined with steel outriggers can withstand hurricanes.
