Retail building in NYC’s Meatpacking District reflects the neighborhood’s industrial history
Sept. 12, 2011
Dating from the late 1930s, the retail building at 837 Washington St. in New York’s Meatpacking District is protected by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Soon the building will receive a four-story glass and steel addition atop its existing two stories. Taconic Investment Partners and Square Mile Capital are developing the project, which is designed by Morris Adjmi Architects. Paying homage to the neighborhood’s industrial history, the design will feature a metal and glass window wall set within a twisting framework of steel beams rotating around a brick core. Original plans called for the building to stand 100 feet tall; however, after adhering to approval conditions, the building will measure just under 80 feet.
