A Denver-area IKEA has powered up a 60,000-sf system of solar energy panels, making it the largest single-use rooftop array on a commercial building in Colorado. More than 2,200 panels help generate 740,000 kWh of electricity per year, enough to power 62 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 564 tons. The store, which is set to open next month, will be the first in the IKEA franchise to incorporate a geothermal system for temperature control. To date, IKEA has initiated six solar programs throughout the country, with eight more pending.
