By Jupiter! Energy recovery system cuts cooling costs 70% at Florida school

March 16, 2011

Looking to make the 21,000-sf Turtle River Montessori School in Jupiter, Fla., as energy efficient as possible, the project’s mechanical engineering firm KAMM Consulting, Deerfield Beach, Fla., specified a high-efficiency, air-to-air energy recovery ventilation wheel from Airxchange. The ERV wheel, which recycles the heating and cooling energy in exhaust air (not the air itself), reduced the load on the HVAC system by as much as 80%. As a result, the HVAC equipment was able to be downsized, reducing the school’s construction costs by about $25,000. The set-up is delivering savings of $6,000 a year compared to a conventional HVAC system.
