Steel roof serves and protects prison project

The C.T. Terrell Prison near Houston was retrofitted with a 238T roofing system by Architectural Building Components. The new roof consists of 181-foot panels of 24-gauge Galvalume Plus Steel installed by Supreme Systems Inc., Dallas. The facility’s existing 110,000-sf, 18-gauge galvanized standing seam panel roof had failed due to rust and perforation of the metal; and because the existing roof spanned bar joists 10 feet on center, attaching a new roof was difficult. Force Engineering & Testing, Humble, Texas, solved the problem by attaching the existing 18-gauge roof to the structural bar joists and using the top of the 18-gauge panel ribs as an attachment point for the 16-gauge hat sections. The new roof system was then attached to the hat sections at the standard five feet on center.
