Fan keeps energy costs low for elementary school in Sarah Palin’s hometown
McCool Carlson Green designed the Fred and Sara Machetanz Elementary School in Sarah Palin’s hometown of Wasilla, Alaska—the first LEED-certified school in the state—with an 1,800-sf, two-story multipurpose room with an open floor plan and plenty of natural light. Concerned about high HVAC energy use due to solar heat, and high energy consumption for heating in the winter, the school installed a 12-foot-diameter Powerfoil fan to recirculate warm air as it rises. The result: less difference in air temperatures throughout the room and a 30% savings on the energy bill.
