Hurricane-proof windows protect library in the Hamptons
When residents were asked for their input on the design of the Westhampton (N.Y.) Free Library, the consensus was for a historical look on the exterior, with lots of natural light for the interior. Since the building is less than a mile from the Atlantic Ocean, hurricane proofing also was essential. Architect Ward Associates, Bohemia, N.Y., designed a Colonial Revival-style building that used Kolbe’s Ultra Series extruded aluminum-clad windows with K-Force Impact performance. The library, which opened in June just in time for summer, was fitted with rectangular and half-circle casements, awnings, and elliptical radius window units, and three “roof monitors” that bring natural light deep into the building. Sandpebble Builders, Southampton, N.Y., was the construction manager.
