Landmark wheel plant gets a facelift with historic replacement windows

Aug. 11, 2010

When owner/developer H-Inc. decided to convert the historic 325,000-sf W.K. Prudden Co. motor wheel manufacturing plant in Lansing, Mich., into loft apartments, the company knew fixing the building's drafty, inefficient exterior windows was a must. The challenge for the developer and project architect Albert Kahn Associates, Detroit, was finding a window system that would match the original steel-framed fenestration while providing improved energy efficiency and daylighting performance.

The team specified the TRACO NX-300 Steel Historical Replacement Windows because they “closely match the original steel windows and offer an extremely energy efficient alternative,” said Harry Hepler of H-Inc. “It not only gave us the visual historical replication we were looking for, but it also contributed to the energy efficiency of the building and, in the end, will help achieve the LEED certification we are looking to achieve.”
