Polished concrete keeps recreational center clean and slip-free

Aug. 11, 2010

The Cardel Recreational Center in Calgary is a large multifunctional family activity center featuring just about every wet and dry sport one could possibly fit under one roof. It is also the city's first LEED Gold-certified building. To maintain a clean, mold-free environment, Dennis O'Byrne, operations manager for the center, specified more than 40,000 sf of FGS/PermaShine polished concrete floors for the hallways, common gathering areas, and pedestrian ramps. O'Byrne said the floor is easy to clean—the staff uses a medium-sized, walk-behind wet floor scrubber using a mild solution of conditioner—and it holds its non-slip qualities after washing.

“It has performed very well for us over the past 18 months,” said O'Byrne. “Even when the floor becomes wet from some of the activities, it retains its non-slip qualities.”
