Photoluminescent safety signs for blackouts

Aug. 11, 2010

Inside the United Nations World Headquarters in New York there are underground hallways and corridors that measure 1,500 to 2,000 feet in length. There are 36 exit doors and stairwells that lead out of these underground passageways. During the New York City blackout of 2003, none of the electric signs or passageway lights worked and a backup system failed, yet thousands of workers were able to navigate the passages back to the safety of their offices thanks to DuraGlow photoluminescent, glow-in-the-dark safety signs and pathway markings.

DuraGlow products are made of photoluminescent acrylic sheets from New Jersey-based Acrilex. Photoluminescent crystals are mixed with an acrylic monomer during manufacture and ambient light recharges the crystals naturally. Acriglo is charged and discharged indefinitely without degradation to the performance of the product.
