New roof for Madison Square Garden

In 2004, Madison Square Garden's 30-year-old built-up asphalt roof assembly had reached its life expectancy. The owners decided it was time for a value-engineered capital improvement. MSG management chose Kemper after conducting an extensive search for the best possible waterproof membrane roof available.

The project called for a complete roof replacement. After looking at a range of options, MSG selected Kemper System's Kemperol BR membrane. The key factors considered by the MSG team included: need for a monolithic membrane that accommodates installation phasing; adaptability to a custom tapered insulation system; a walkable, wearing surfacing for mechanical areas; a seamless membrane permanently adhering to difficult flashings, penetrations, and vents; and an enduring aesthetic with stone ballast that matches the building's architecture.

The roofing project had unique conditions and an extremely short construction schedule. The roof replacement was staged with pie-shaped roofing areas while the arena remained in full operation. The complete roofing assembly included the installation of new decking over the existing cable-supported metal deck, temporary waterproofing, and prelaminated tapered isocyanurate insulation with an asphalt protection board by Soprema.
