Acrylic 'wave wall' brightens café

Aug. 11, 2010

As part of its tropical water motif for the newly renovated café at the Children's Hospital in Richmond, Va., local architect Baskervill designed a coloful, transparent “wave wall” that extends the full length of a load-bearing wall in the dining space. The waves were fabricated with 1/4-inch-thick, 48x96-inch sheets of Acrylite FF acrylic, which were custom-cut and routed into assorted wave patterns and connected to the wall from varying distances with round brushed stainless-steel metal standoffs. The depth variation creates an interweaving effect while the incandescent lighting installed above mimics the sun shining on ocean waves.
