Polyiso helps insulate coastal biology laboratory

Aug. 11, 2010

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) in Bar Harbor, Maine, is perched high atop the steep granite cliffs of Acadia National Park. MDIBL has 10 separate laboratory buildings with a total of 32 research units, and does some of the most advanced marine studies in the world.

MDIBL's recent growth prompted laboratory officials to push for construction of a new LEED Gold building that could accommodate the growing number of researchers flocking to the site each year.

Completed in July, the building's roof system features more than eight inches of polyisocyanurate insulation. Local contractor Roof Systems installed 7,800 sf of insulation to the 8,700-sf shingled portion of the roof. The polyiso insulation offers an excellent R-value that will help lower heating and cooling costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
