Engineering firm Smith Seckman Reid acquires Gordon, Gumeson and Associates

Gordon, Gumeson and Associates Becomes SSR/GGA

August 11, 2010

Nashville, Tenn.-based Smith Seckman Reid, Inc., an engineering design and facility consulting firm, will acquire Gordon, Gumeson and Associates, Inc. (GGA), a Denver-based engineering firm. With the acquisition, Smith Seckman Reid (SSR) now has nine office locations throughout the United States.

The acquisition came as the result of a marketing alliance initiated more than 18 months ago between the two firms to pursue work in the Rocky Mountain region. As the principals of the firm came to know one another it made sense for GGA to become a part of SSR, said Richard Morris, executive vice president of SSR, who will be responsible for overseeing the Denver office.

Founded in 1985, GGA provides mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design services to a wide range of commercial, institutional and government clients. GGA currently has 35 employees serving clients from its Denver office. The firm also employs two people in Cheyenne, Wyo.

“GGA’s core strengths of providing mechanical and electrical engineering are an ideal match with SSR’s demonstrated expertise in these areas and servicing the health care, higher education and science and technology markets,” said Morris. “We have been looking forward to expanding our geographic presence in the western United States and the Rocky Mountain region was an area of the country with several business opportunities. We have already secured several new projects in the Denver area and are excited to begin serving these new clients and better servicing our current clients with a presence in this region of the country.“

“The shareholders of GGA were unanimous in taking this important step,” said Richard M. Gordon, principal and founder of GGA.“We feel strongly that this new structure is in the best interests of our clients and employees, and it will deliver added value to both.”

The Denver office location will operate under the SSR/GGA name for a one-year period. After a year under this transitional name, the company will operate as SSR.

Employees of GGA will remain with SSR/GGA and become part of a combined force of more than 420 engineers in nine SSR offices across the country. GGA’s management team will continue to be a key part of the office’s leadership, and the firm’s clients will continue to work with the same team they have come to know and trust with the added resources, capabilities and expertise of a nationally recognized firm.

“Immediately we will bring a greater depth of resources to SSR/GGA clients in the areas of telecommunications, commissioning, construction management, energy advocacy, sustainable design, regulatory compliance and facilities management,” added Morris.

An employee-owned firm founded in 1968, SSR provides a wide spectrum of consulting services related to facility and infrastructure design, operation and management. The firm delivers services for facilities nationwide, including health care, education, science and technology, research, sports and entertainment, government, corrections, infrastructure, commercial and industrial clients. SSR is licensed in 41 states and has worked on projects in more than 10 foreign countries. Projects range in size from small renovations to multiple building and infrastructure projects exceeding multi-millions of dollars.

SSR already has a presence in the western United States with offices in Phoenix, Houston and Dallas, as well as offices in Nashville, Memphis, Tenn., Knoxville, Tenn., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Sarasota, Fla.
