Tacoma, Wash.

Developer works to close land deal for hotel

As subcontractor R.W. Rhine, Tacoma, continues demolition and site preparation work for the convention center, Hollander Investments, Bellingham, Wash., is in the process of closing a land deal for a hotel across the street.

The proposed six-story, limited-service hotel will have 160 rooms. It will be constructed directly behind — and will link with — the three-story, 111-year-old Waddell building, which will be restored and converted into office and retail space on the bottom two levels and hotel rooms on the top floor.

Mixed-use center will act as public thoroughfare

Working with the city, the building team for the 1.58 million-sq.-ft. mixed-use center has taken steps to integrate the development with the fabric of the surrounding city, including the reopening of a Bay Area Transit (BART) station and creating walkways through the building.

"San Francisco pays an great amount of attention to public spaces, and how people move around," says Dan van Leeuwen, project developer with developer Forest City Enterprises, Cleveland. "This development will connect to the San Francisco way of life."
