'The Swamp' to get $1.45 billion modernization at Univ. of Florida
The University of Florida released plans for a $1.45 billion modernization of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. It is “one of the most ambitious—and comprehensive—venue redevelopment efforts in the history of college athletics,” according to the university.
The project will “honor the traditions that define Florida Football, enhance the fan experience, strengthen Florida Athletics financially, and ensure that future generations of Gators can continue to experience one of the most iconic venues in all of sports.”
Only a handful of recent stadium redevelopments, Texas A&M’s renovation of Kyle Field in 2014 and Penn State’s ongoing renovation of Beaver Stadium, compare in scope, according to Florida’s athletic director. Those projects carried estimated construction costs of $450 million and $750 million, respectively.
The Florida project is designed to preserve the iconic character of “The Swamp” while addressing critical infrastructure needs, improving accessibility, and enhancing the overall fan experience.
The project will maintain the stadium’s distinctive bowl configuration and close-to-the-field seating experience. “Our tagline for this is going to be, ‘Bigger, Better, Louder,’ says Scott Stricklin, the university’s director of athletics, “More structure is going to hold in more sound. This is going to be a louder environment.”
By combining modern amenities, updated infrastructure, and expanded revenue-generating opportunities with the traditions and atmosphere that define Florida football, the renovation seeks to position the venue for the next generation of student-athletes and fans.
Planned improvements include expanded concourses, upgraded restroom and concession facilities, enhanced stadium connectivity, improved circulation and entry points, and significant investments in premium hospitality offerings.
Current plans call for the stadium to remain operational throughout construction, with a phased implementation strategy allowing the football team to continue playing home games on campus.
Construction is expected to begin following the 2027 football season with completion targeted for 2030, coinciding with the stadium’s centennial anniversary. Funding is expected to come from a combination of private philanthropy, capital reserves, project-generated revenues, and long-term financing strategies.
