The legislation calls for all classrooms to be equipped with air quality monitors.
April 30, 2026
A bill to monitor and improve indoor air quality in schools recently passed the Illinois House of Representatives.

The bill calls for all active classrooms to be equipped with air quality monitors. The bill’s advocates say the state would spend about $10 million to buy monitors for classrooms statewide.

The legislation also requires the state board of education to work with the Illinois Department of Public Health to create a document explaining the values of good indoor air quality. Some legislators are concerned about whether the monitors will be purchased with federal or state funds.

The proposal was sent to the state Senate for further consideration.
