Florida International University breaks ground on a new academic medical center
Construction has begun on the $162 million Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center, a collaboration between Florida International University and Baptist Health South Florida.
Stantec is providing architecture, medical planning, landscape architecture, sustainability consulting, and other services. The renderings indicate a contemporary glass-and-metal structure with expansive glazing.
Located on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus in Miami, the seven-story, 163,000-sf facility brings together medical education and patient care, enabling medical students, residents, and clinical faculty to learn and work together in the same environment where patients receive care. The center also supports interprofessional training for students across FIU’s healthcare disciplines, including nursing, physician assistant, and occupational therapy, among others.
In addition to providing dedicated learning spaces for medical students and residents, the center offers a range of outpatient services, including multispecialty care, diagnostic imaging, same-day surgery, and infusion services. The facility also features an outpatient retail pharmacy.
The academic medical center represents an expansion of the collaboration announced in 2023 between FIU, a public research university, and Baptist Health, South Florida’s largest nonprofit healthcare system.
“Our students already receive outstanding clinical training across Baptist Health and our other clinical affiliates,” Dr. Juan C. Cendan, FIU Medicine dean and senior vice president for health affairs at FIU, said in a statement. “What’s different here is location and integration. With an academic medical center on campus, education, research, and patient care are woven directly into the daily life of the university.”
In April, FIU Medicine announced a $30 million gift from the center’s namesake philanthropists, Helen and Jacob Shaham, founders of the senior living developer and operator The Palace Group.
The Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center is slated for completion in 2028.
