Crowdsourced map tracks more than 4,000 major AI data centers across the U.S.

Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Georgia lead in number of current locations for data center construction projects.

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich recently unveiled The Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting website that tracks more than 4,000 major AI data centers being built across the U.S., according to an Inc. report.

The crowdsourced map aims to give the public “a platform to speak up and voice concerns about AI data centers in their communities.” It shows data centers that are already operating, those under construction, as well as rumored and proposed projects.

There are about 2,700 crowdsourced data center reports to date, with a majority in Texas (612), followed by Pennsylvania (195), Ohio (155), and Georgia (126). Scientists and community activists have contended that massive data centers create problems including higher energy demand and utility bills, high demand for water, and pollution of the environment.

They also argue that the data centers are disproportionately located in lower-income areas. Based on the web site’s data, most people are concerned about how the centers will affect their community’s water supply (41.2%), electric supply grid (22.2%), and overall health (18.1%).
