More than 1,500 data centers are under development in the U.S.
There are more than 1,500 data centers in various stages of development in the U.S., and most of them are headed for rural areas, according to the Pew Research Center.
The U.S. currently has more than 3,000 data centers in operation. Planned data centers are largely in different parts of the country from those that currently exist.
Some 67% of planned data centers are in rural areas, while 87% of existing data centers are in urban ones. About 39% of planned data centers are in counties that currently don’t have any. The South and Midwest lead in locations for planned data centers.
Virginia, Texas, and Georgia have the most data centers in the planning stage. Virginia and Texas have the most currently operating data centers (398 and 296, respectively). They are followed by California (277), Ohio (166), and New York (148).
