China opens a waterfront science and technology museum

Designed by gmp Architects, the Qingdao Science & Technology Museum takes life by and with the water as its thematic and design focus.

The new Qingdao Science & Technology Museum has opened on the Hong Island peninsula in Jiaozhou Bay, an inlet in eastern China off the Yellow Sea.

The city of Qingdao is one of China’s leading centers for marine research and home to Ocean University of China.

Designed by Germany-based gmp Architects, the Qingdao Science & Technology Museum features exhibitions on the history of the sea, modern marine research, the diversity of marine habitats, and the development of shipping. The museum’s centerpiece is a historic wooden boat that stands several stories high.

Life by and with the water serves as the museum’s thematic focus and the architecture’s guiding concept. The museum has been designed as a compact cube on a podium at the water’s edge. Large openings in the metal façade offer views of the sea.

A public pathway runs along the ground floor to an observation terrace, with views across the bay. The building’s circulation routes and sightlines are also oriented toward the sea.

From a central courtyard, one entrance leads to the museum, café, and shop, and the other entrance on the opposite side goes to the conference facilities.

The new museum aims to strengthen the region’s scientific and cultural profile while also catalyzing development of the waterfront.

The building’s location in the northeastern part of the bay, instead of the originally planned site on Qingdao’s seaside promenade, indicates its role in the city’s long-term development.

Following the base building’s completion in 2024, the interiors and installation were finished this year. With the project’s first phase now complete, the team has begun work on the second phase, which will include a marine aquarium and a planetarium.

The museum project totaled about $110 million, including about $50 million on construction. Both phases of the project will cost roughly $345 million.

On the project team: Qingdao Huatong State-Owned Capital Organisation (developer), gmp Architects (design architect), Shanghai United Design Group and Qingdao Tengyuan Design Institute (architects of record and MEP/structural engineers).
