The Kansas City Symphony recently unveiled plans for a new live music venue in Kansas City’s South Plaza district aimed at strengthening the Symphony’s future while expanding the city’s ability to host national touring artists and new live music experiences.

The indoor venue, designed for audiences of up to 4,600 guests and targeted to open in 2028, will host touring artists across genres and support a limited number of Symphony performances that benefit from amplified or enhanced production formats.

The new venue will be designed to support live performance of films with orchestra, which regularly rank among the Symphony’s most in-demand offerings.  The design includes a flat main floor with multiple configurations, tiered seating, and VIP spaces, as well as integrated sound, video, and lighting built for immersive shows across genres.

From indie and hip-hop touring artists to orchestral film and jazz, the Symphony’s new venue is the first multipurpose space in the region custom-designed for such a creative range with world-class production capability.

The venue will total about 75,000 sf, with a design centered on intimacy at scale, flexibility, performance quality, and audience experience. The facility will have flexible configuration to accommodate standing room and special performances.

To support a wide spectrum of programming, an innovative stage design can adapt from symphonic and orchestral performances to contemporary concerts, creating the right setting for each genre. The design prioritizes the artist and production experience by enabling maximum ease of load-in, best-in-class sound, and amenities designed to serve the needs of touring artists.

The venue’s flat main floor supports multiple configurations, complemented by tiered seating and a variety of premium club and VIP offerings. The bowl geometry has been optimized to foster an intimate relationship between artist and audience, ensuring strong sightlines and a sense of connection throughout the space.

Acoustics are a core design driver, with strategies integrated into the architecture to support both amplified and acoustic performances at a high level. Behind the scenes, the venue includes well-appointed artist spaces and highly efficient back-of-house planning to support touring productions and symphony operations.

Integrated sound, video, and lighting systems further enhance the immersive quality of the experience, making the venue adaptable, dynamic, and built for creative range. Located near multiple Kansas City transit and streetcar stops, the venue will function as a cultural anchor in South Plaza, driving tourism and activity for local restaurants, hotels and businesses year-round.
