Valspar’s Green Innovations Lower VOCs

Jeff Alexander | December 1, 2015

As a leading global manufacturer of coatings products, Valspar is setting an example for the industry. Our scientists are driving green innovation, often reducing costs and boosting performance in the process. Producing safe and environmentally friendly coatings is a priority to us.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that form a gaseous state at room temperature, and are commonly found in coatings. Although not all are dangerous, some VOCs are of human and environmental concern because they cause smog and ground-level ozone, or impact indoor air quality. Valspar manufactures high-quality products, with fewer VOCs.

Solvents are the biggest contributor of VOCs in coatings. After coatings are applied, the solvent evaporates, leaving the solids.

We reduce VOCs in several ways. At Valspar, we are formulating coatings with a higher percentage of solids, which lowers VOC emissions and boosts coverage rates. We are ensuring that less coating volatizes into the air, promoting air quality and protecting the environment.

Coating performance is another consideration when selecting environmentally friendly products. Long-lasting coatings require less maintenance, emitting fewer VOCs over time.

When coil coatings are factory applied on coil coating lines, VOCs are captured and safely incinerated. Sometimes this heat from incineration can be reused to heat the ovens during the coating processes, saving energy.

As a company with a culture of innovation, we are incorporating the best practices and materials. Our products go beyond environmental regulations to provide high-performance coatings that stand the test of time.
