SAN DIEGO, CA – April 29, 2009 – URS Corporation has been awarded a contract to provide National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation for a new naval hospital at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Pendleton, California, which is located between the cities of Oceanside and San Clemente.
The contract originally had been awarded to support proposed construction of the hospital in 2012. However, on a recent visit to Los Angeles, President Barack Obama announced that stimulus money will be tapped to complete NEPA documentation by the fall of 2010. President Obama said, “Because of the Recovery Act . . . a new hospital will be built at Camp Pendleton that will give our servicemen and women the care they deserve.”
URS is currently working with Navy Medicine West, Naval Hospital and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest to develop the proposed project and alternatives to be evaluated as part of the Environmental Assessment (EA). The EA evaluates the project’s potential effects on biological resources, cultural resources, traffic, land use and socioeconomic impacts, air quality, visual resources, noise, geology and soils, hydrology, utilities and services, and hazardous materials.
To complete the NEPA analysis by the fall of 2010, URS has mobilized a team of biologists to perform vegetation and rare plant surveys, vernal pool and wetland surveys, and sampling for the San Diego fairy shrimp.
