Lighting control helps Las Vegas area school cut energy costs

As part of a major energy retrofit project that also includes HVAC replacements and installation of new insulated walls, the Clark County School District in North Las Vegas is incorporating Square D Clipsal lighting control products throughout the 12 buildings on its Fay Herron Elementary School campus. Clipsal keypads and occupancy sensors will help reduce the electrical load, while at the same time introducing more natural light into the spaces.

All classrooms will feature Clipsal four-key Neo lighting control keypads (above) that will open and close dampers that admit daylight through solar-reflective tubing. The keypads will also be configured for video presentations—teachers hit a button and the lights turn off and the solar reflective tubing closes.

With the Clipsal occupancy sensors, as soon as someone enters a classroom, the solar reflective tubing automatically opens. If the natural light does not meet 55 foot-candles (a state minimum requirement for daylight), the lighting control system will automatically trigger the lights.

Las Vegas-based Control Contractors won the bid to complete the renovation project. The firm specified the Square D Clipsal product line, which was subsequently approved by the school district.
