$17 billion in new U.S. embassies planned. Many U.S. consulates and embassies have been deemed security risks and will soon be replaced in an unprecedented wave of embassy building. The projects, estimated to total $17 billion, are aimed at safeguarding the people who work in American diplomatic installations abroad.

New Salt Lake City library has cracks and leaks. Cracked paving stones, a leaky glass roof, crumbling stairs, and underground water sloshing up against subterranean parking are among the problems plaguing the $84 million Salt Lake City public library, which opened in February 2003. The project, designed by Moshe Safdie, who maintains offices in the U.S. and Israel, used limestone quarried in Jerusalem for pavers; they will be replaced with granite. Local contractor Big D was the GC on the job. City council member Nancy Saxton has asked for a review of the project.

Look for the world's first sustainable city by 2010 in China. Plans are in the works to create the first sustainable "eco-city" at Dongtan in Shanghai. Chinese authorities hope it will define the future of sustainable urban development in China and beyond. New York-based Arup is creating the master plan.
