Mason Run Receives Award

August 11, 2010

Mason Run, a sustainable residential redevelopment of a brownfield site in Monroe, received the Michigan Association of Environmental Professionals' (MAEP) Environmental Excellence Award in the Brownfield category. MAEP honored the city of Monroe, Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. (SME) and Crosswinds Communities for turning a contaminated old paper mill site into a residential community with 500 single-family homes.

Approximately 150,000 cubic yards of cinder/ash waste covered 37 acres of the site, and approximately 300,000 square feet of buried plant basements remained on the site. The Mason Run team secured more than $6.4 million in brownfield financing for environmental response actions and developed innovative solutions to save $2.5 millions in response costs.

MAEP is a multidisciplinary professional society formed in 1978 to advance the practice of environmental management in Michigan. MAEP provides its members information on issues affecting their professions and provides opportunities for continuing education, professional development, recognition, and interaction with peers. As an affiliate of the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP), MAEP supports the promotion of ethical practices, technical competency and professional standards in environmental fields.

SME supports clients at every stage of the building cycle, from site acquisition and design through construction and maintenance/restoration, including numerous aspects of brownfield redevelopment and financing. Founded in 1964, SME has offices in Bay City, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Plymouth, Shelby Township, Traverse City, and Toledo, Ohio. SME's work in the geosciences, materials and the environment serves many markets in the built and natural environment — commercial, development/redevelopment, education, energy, healthcare, industrial, retail, state/local government, telecommunications, transportation, and agriculture.
