Library Addition for University of Chicago

August 11, 2010

Barton Malow Co. is the preconstruction manager for the new research pavilion addition to the University of Chicago's Joseph Regenstein Library. The $50-million project, designed by architectural firm Murphy/Jahn, is scheduled to begin construction in spring. The addition includes approximately 60,000 square feet of new construction, an oval footprint, at the corner of S. Ellis Ave. and E. 57th St. on the university's Hyde Park campus. A new bridge will connect the addition to the existing library.

The only system component visible above grade will be a huge glass dome — 240 feet long by 120 feet wide. Other components include a large multi-use digital room, special collections room, circulation desk, reading rooms, and office space.
