K-12 Schools

How do you create an inspiring space that has to survive the wear and tear, daily, of hundreds or maybe even thousands of kids and teens? Not only will the design be challenging, but the district’s budget may be an obstacle of its own. However, with the right approach, a school can be the foundation of a generation.

The LEED Platinum 120,000-sf Lewis and Clark State Office Building, Jefferson City, Mo. Design firm BNIM (architect/interior design) led the Building Team of Rumsey Engineers (mechanical design engineer), Smith & Boucher (MEP EOR), Clanton & Associates (lighting design), ENSAR Group (daylighting consultant), and Professional Contractors and Engineers (GC). The $18.1 million project won a Building Team Award (Platinum) from Building Design+Construction (www.BDCnetwork.com/BNIM/LewisAndClark).Photo: Farshid Assassi/Courtesy BNIM

Ennead Architects led the renovation and expansion of facilities for the Yale Art Gallery, now spanning three buildings. Shown here is the Swartout building, also known as the Old Yale Art Gallery. The 1928 neo-Gothic structure was cleaned and restored, but also received new white cube spaces on upper stories, as well as a new sculpture terrace. The project also included renovation of the 1953 main building, originally designed by Louis Kahn. Photo: Ennead Architects
