The Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Chicago) announced that Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) is the recipient of this year’s Firm of the Year Award. The Firm of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize a single firm’s outstanding achievements, consistent excellence, and ongoing contributions to the advancement of the architectural profession.
SOM is a leading architecture, urban planning, interior design, and engineering firm, with a 75-year reputation for design excellence. Since its inception, SOM has been a leader in the research and development of specialized technologies, new processes and innovative ideas, many of which have had a palpable and lasting impact on the design profession and the physical environment. The firm's longstanding leadership in design and building technology has been honored with more than 1,400 awards for quality, innovation, and management.
Most recently, the firm was recognized with 10 Design Excellence Awards presented by AIA Chicago in October 2011 for projects ranging from Burj Khalifa in Dubai to a Panama Government City Master Plan. SOM’s notable editions to the Chicago skyline include the Willis Tower, the John Hancock Center and the Inland Steel Building. International projects range from China World Trade Center in Beijing to the Rolex Tower in Dubai.
A panel of three jurors from AIA St. Louis selected SOM as the Firm of the Year. Jurors commented that “SOM has a distinct culture that is collaborative and team oriented with a history of high aspirations for design excellence.” They also stated that “SOM’s innovation continues to impact and inform tall building design around the world, while it is also evident that SOM is an involved and active citizen of Chicago, reaching outside of itself to positively impact the community and its organizations.” The Firm Award will be presented this evening at AIA Chicago’s Annual Meeting at the ReBuilding Exchange. Permanent tribute to Daniel Burnham and his Plan of Chicago proposed for Grant Park Museum Campus
The first-place winner of a design competition for a public memorial celebrating Daniel Burnham's impact on Chicago will be announced at a news conference Wednesday, July 8, at 10am CDT. The proposed site for the memorial is on the Museum Campus just north of The Field Museum. The announcement comes after nearly two years of planning by Chicago's architecture, design and urban planning community about how to best honor the legacy of Burnham and the Plan of Chicago he co-wrote with Edward Bennett.

Architecture billings index takes turn for the worse
After showing signs of stabilization over the last three months, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) plunged nearly five points in June. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the June ABI rating was 37.7, far lower than the 42.9 the previous month.

Populous selected to design 'crystalline skin' stadium for 2014 Winter Olympics
Russian officials have selected global architect Populous to design the main stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia. The 40,000-seat stadium will feature a crystalline skin that "engages with its surroundings by day and provides an iconic representation of the color and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night," said Populous senior principal John Barrow.

Three Opus Corporation companies file for bankruptcy
Opus Corporation, a developer headquartered in Minnetonka, Minn., filed for bankruptcy in three of its five regional operating companies: Opus East, Opus South, and Opus West. CEO Mark Rauenhorst said sharp declines in commercial real estate values and tight credit markets caused difficulties in refinancing assets and restructuring lending agreements.
