75 top building products for 2023

From a bladeless rooftop wind energy system that mimics the airfoils on a race car, to a troffer light fixture with built-in continuous visible light disinfection for hospitals, to a stone wool ceiling system that recreates the look of smooth, flowing plaster ceilings, innovation is plentiful in our annual 75 Top Products report. 

If those do not impress, then how about the first-ever asthma and allergy friendly-certified carpet? Or a patented ventilated door that solves the noisy laundry closet problem in multifamily units? Or the first major innovation to the common electrical box since the 1960s?   

These and 69 other award-winning products make up our annual “best of the best” in new and updated building products for 2023. 

HOW WE SELECTED THE WINNERS       
It’s no easy task to evaluate the vast universe of new products, materials, and systems across dozens of product categories and hundreds of manufacturers each year. To start, we invited all product manufacturers serving the U.S./Canadian commercial, institutional, industrial, and multifamily buildings markets to participate in an open submission process. Entries were free, and companies could submit up to three products.  

A jury of practicing professionals and the BD+C editorial team reviewed and scored the submissions, based on the following factors:

• Overall potential benefit to project teams (e.g., solves a problem, installs quicker, improves the building design, speeds construction)
• Usefulness to clients/owners/developers (performance, durability, design, ROI, maintenance, etc.)
• Impact on building occupants (health, wellness, safety, productivity) 
• Overall innovation within the product category (Is it a “first of its kind?” Does it advance the product category in some way?).  

More than 75 manufacturers participated in the program this year, submitting 142 products in all. In addition to the open submission process, the BD+C editorial team selected “Editors’ Picks” based on the same criteria.  

In the end, the jury selected 66 products as “Judges’ Picks.” The editorial team chose nine products as “Editors’ Picks.”

E-Lids electrical boxes

Electrical boxes have not changed since the 1960s—until now. Conventional open-faced electrical boxes require two mobilizations to finish device installation. They also force electricians to terminate thousands of conductors on-site each year. E-lids boxes eliminate much of this work by offering a pre-assembled solution. The boxes arrive at the jobsite with conductors already connected (pigtailed) to the device, greatly speeding installation and reducing errors.

SunGuard SNX 70+ coated glass was developed to provide a neutral, slight-gray appearance so reflected color will be more consistent at any viewing angle.

It provides good acoustic performance—achieving up to 48 STC with two layers of 12.8mm acoustic laminate glass (double glazed system)—and integrates seamlessly with generic drywall. Manufactured with low-embodied-carbon aluminum with a minimum of 75% post-consumer recycled content.

Powerbond RS is the first soft-surface flooring to earn asthma & allergy friendly Certification from Allergy Standards Ltd. and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. It was tested for VOCs, allergen removal, and particulate release into the air during cleaning. In testing, 95% of allergens were removed effectively with a simple dry vacuuming. The hybrid carpet flooring combines the look and feel of carpet with the durability and cleanability of a resilient surface.
