Recognizing that the architectās single greatest contribution to energy efficient and zero-energy buildings continues to be the thoughtful design of the building enclosure, the Boston Society of Architects and the Boston chapter of the Building Enclosure Council (BEC-Boston) have announced a High Performance Building award that will assess building enclosure innovation through the demonstrated design, construction, and operation of the building enclosure, for projects located in the Northeast.
The award will honor the craft, science, and engineering of high-performance building enclosures, promote innovation, and encourage a transfer of information and technology surrounding building enclosure design and the related science.
In November 2007, the Boston Society of Architectsā Building Enclosure Council awarded the First Annual High Performance Building Enclosure Design Award to 60 Oxford Street in Cambridge, Mass. Harvard University, Perry Dean Rogers | Partners Architects, and Lee Kennedy Co. designed and constructed a building enclosure that not only effectively manages heat, air, moisture, and daylight, but includes a series of innovations that exemplifies high-performance building enclosures. The BEC sub-committee responsible for organizing the award was also recognized by the National Institute of Building Sciences for outstanding program development.
Entry Rules
The 2010 High Performance Building competition is open to built commercial, institutional, and one- and two-family projects located in the New England states (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) and New York State designed by any architect/firm anywhere in the world--with a completion date after September 1, 2006 and before December 31, 2008. Completion date is the date that a certificate of occupancy was issued.
All building uses and types that comply with the applicable commercial or residential codes for that project are encouraged to apply. Applications are due Friday February 26, 2010. BEC is encouraging team submissions, since the owner, architect, and contractor must be identified in the application.Ā
