New York-based alcohol distribution center achieves LEED Silver

By Leslie Streicher, Associate Editor | August 17, 2011

Pennsylvania-based KSS Architects, in collaboration with BBL Construction Services, Albany, N.Y., has completed work on the Empire Merchants North distribution center in Coxsackie, N.Y. The $27.5 million, 255,100-sf center is located on a 21-acre site. One of the largest alcohol distributors in the state, Empire Merchants North, achieved LEED Silver for the project. More than 75% of the site-generated construction waste was diverted from landfill, while 31% of the site area is preserved natural habitat. High-performance wall and roofing systems and a white roofing membrane help mitigate energy consumption, and water-efficient plumbing fixtures reduce usage by 32%. The Charmer Sunbelt Group, Green County Industrial Development Authority, R.W. Beck, Novus Engineers, Hershberg Civil Engineers, and W&H Systems completed the Building Team.
