Environmental sciences magnet school receives platinum-worthy renovations

By Leslie Streicher, Associate Editor | January 4, 2012

The recently converted Mary M. Hooker Environmental Sciences Magnet School in Hartford, Conn., has received LEED Platinum certification, making it one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly schools in the country. PDS Engineering & Construction oversaw the renovations with architecture firm BL Companies. A 30,000-sf, $42 million addition provided more parking, a cafeteria, a laboratory with 50 freshwater and salt water aquariums for fish breeding, a 30-seat interactive film theater, a weather station, a glass-shrouded lobby with a fish pond, and a greenhouse where students grow their own vegetables for lunch.
