Accelerate Live! talk: Regenerative design — When sustainability is not enough
Accelerate Live! talk: Regenerative design — When sustainability is not enough

SUMMARY
A fundamental shift is occurring from the old guard of sustainability to the new one of regenerative design. Whereas sustainable development attempts to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, regenerative development seeks to rejuvenate the environment and the people who live within its ecosystem.

In this 15-minute talk at BD+C’s Accelerate Live! conference (May 10, 2018, Chicago), HMC’s Eric Carbonnier poses the question: What if buildings could actually rejuvenate ecosystems?

Carbonnier discusses how the goal of regenerative design is not simply to take less from nature, but to inspirit the environment around us. This starts by understanding our limitations and embracing the unknown. While the theory of regenerative design is—to some degree—may be unattainable, it is this "unknown" that inspires us to push the limits of what we know.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Eric Carbonnier, PhD, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Vice President of Sustainability, Associate Principal

His dedication to sustainability, resilience, and energy independence resonates throughout his architectural practice and building science research. His approach brings the environment central to his regenerative development views and innovates solutions specific to every environment. Carbonnier's sustainable design initiatives resonate throughout his career, and has collaborated on numerous high-performance Pre-K–12 and community college projects designs. His career started at Montgomery Watson Harza (MWH) as an Environmental Engineer in 1989 focused on global water infrastructure projects. In 2000, Carbonnier joined HMC Architects' building partnerships with Pre-K–12 and community college clients throughout California.

Accelerate Live! talk: The smart jobsite — Predictive visual data analytics for proactive project controls

SUMMARY
The rise of reality capture technology, combined with enterprising software development, has opened the door to true real-time analysis of construction jobsites.

Firms are utilizing images and video from smartphones, drones, rovers, laser scanners, and 360 cameras to more effectively track progress and productivity on the jobsite, and identify risk for potential delays.

In this 15-minute talk at BD+C’s Accelerate Live! conference (May 10, 2018, Chicago), a trio of experts in predictive visual data analytics presents how design-build giant Clayco has leveraged this technology to achieve production efficiency on several construction sites.

They present how images and videos from drones and smartphone cameras are used within computer vision algorithms to automatically generate 3D reality models over project timeline. They also show how AI algorithms compare reality models with 4D BIM to track progress and productivity and identify risk for potential delays.

Accelerate Live! talk: Design innovation at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture

SUMMARY
From the world’s tallest tower to the globe’s first large-scale “pure” glass sphere, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture has pulled off its share of daunting design feats over the past decade.

But what exactly is the firm’s “secret sauce” for design innovation and next-level problem solving?

In this 15-minute talk at BD+C’s Accelerate Live! conference (May 10, 2018, Chicago), AS+GG’s Anthony Viola takes us behind the magic curtain to illuminate the firm’s methods for nurturing design innovation.

The common thread is the concept that form follows performance. This method of design investigates complex architectural problems by exploring new solutions through an intense and iterative process, one where high- and low-tech methodologies are equally explored and implemented.

Three current projects illustrate: how the teams at AS+GG innovate though “making”; how the teams use technology to engage in the design process; how they help generate discourse between interdisciplinary design teams that can form more salient questions; and how they discover alternative design solutions that lead to architectural breakthroughs.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anthony Viola, AIA, LEED AP
Senior Designer, Team Leader
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture

Anthony Viola, Senior Designer and Team Leader at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG), works on high-performance projects that focus on the design, development, and use of parametric computational tools that push the boundaries of integrated performance-based design. During his 12+ years of experience, Anthony has designed many structures through this integrated design process. He seeks to find new ways to realize a project using low-tech methods – such as 3D physical models – and high-tech processes like advanced computer simulations. By developing a clear idea of how each project fits into its site parameters and user conditions he is able to sculpt the building to its most efficient form. His methods have garnered attention in the architectural community, particularly in the younger generation, through dozens of workshops and other well-attended design events. He is a 2017 Dubin Young Architect Award winner as well as a 2018 National AIA Young Architect Award winner.

Accelerate Live! talk: Scaling change in a changing industry, Chris Mayer, Suffolk Construction

In the GC community, Suffolk Construction was one of the first to not only recognize the potential of emerging technologies, like drones and reality capture, but to establish a formal process for vetting these tools.

The firm established R&D teams across the organization to pilot technologies on actual projects. If the desired results were achieved, the team would then evaluate the scalability across the organization.

It all sounds so simple, right? Well it’s not.

In this 15-minute talk at BD+C’s Accelerate Live! conference (May 11, 2017, Chicago), Chris Mayer, Suffolk’s Chief Innovation Officer, talks about the firm’s framework for vetting and implementing new technologies and processes.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Chris Mayer is the Executive Vice President & Chief Innovation Officer at Suffolk Construction. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the company's innovation initiatives, managing their execution, and measuring their results to achieve safer and more affordable building. In addition, Chris heads up Suffolk's Innovation Committee, which is focused on identifying new innovations and testing them for feasibility. Prior to joining Suffolk, Chris was a consultant in the digital media and online education industries where his focus was on developing strategic technology plans that align with, and enable, successful business growth. Chris also worked as the Publisher of the Boston Globe newspaper and websites for four years and worked at the news organization for nearly 30 years. He oversaw the Globe's two-brand online strategy, developed new technologies that allowed subscribers to access Globe content on smartphones and tablets, and launched RadioBDC which introduced the Globe to a new digital radio audience. Chris currently serves on the board of Community Servings, a not-for-profit food and nutrition program that provides services throughout Massachusetts to individuals and families living with critical and chronic illnesses. Chris received his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Yale University.
