Steel Joist Institute award winners

By Staff | August 11, 2010

Each first-place team received a cash prize and a custom-designed, three-dimensional award depicting the use of steel joists.

First-place winning entries include:

Unique Applications Category
University of Illinois football facility in Urbana, Ill.
Structural Engineering Firm: Tylk Gustafson Reckers Wilson Andrews, Chicago, Ill.
Steel Fabricator: United Steel Fabricators, Inc., Indianapolis, Ind.

Necessity was the inspiration in this steel joist project. The football team's need for large, open, column-free space and specific height clearances at certain points led the designers to use an arched structural steel box truss spanning 320 degrees. The remainder of the roof is supported by sloping 56' deep bar joists supported by the main truss and perimeter framing. The bar joists allowed a large amount of roof to be constructed in a short amount of time (16 working days).

In addition to being a constructible solution, the design allowed them architectural and aesthetic flexibility.

  • Non-Industrial Products Category
First Alliance Church in Erie, Pa.
Structural Engineering Firm: Steele Structural Engineering, Erie, Pa.
Steel Fabricator: Erie Steel Products, Erie, Pa.

The use of steel joists was perfect for the congregation's aesthetic and economic needs. Steel joists give the light, open feeling to the sanctuary the congregation desired while saving them money. Steel joists allowed flexibility in floor/low and high roof framing through the use of K, VS, DLH and KCS Series joists.

Long span joists allowed designers to leave certain walls non-bearing making their plans for future additions to the sanctuary possible.

The preliminary budget for a glue-laminated timber based shell was 30 percent higher than the steel joist structure. The savings more than paid for the building fit-out (pews, floor covering, sound system, stage lighting and custom woodworking).

  • Industrial Products Category
Valeo Electronics Assembly Facility in Fort Worth, Texas
Structural Engineering Firm: GideonToal, Inc., Fort Worth, Texas
Steel Fabricator: North Texas Steel Company, Inc., Fort Worth, Texas

The challenge in this project was to achieve architectural and technical coherence. The administration and manufacturing departments had different requirements that needed to blend together in one structure. The administration area consists of 1½ wide rib metal deck supported by K-Series steel joists spanning 50 feet to 70 feet. To achieve a flexible manufacturing area, one column in the center of the area was used. Steel trusses located along the center of the manufacturing area span north to south and support LH-Series long-span joists which span 105 feet. The LH joists support a 3' metal deck.

Steel joists allowed open-space flexibility as well as providing the high-tech industrial look desired by Valeo Electronics.
