HANOVER, PA - Conewago Enterprises, Inc., a leading design-build general contractor, was recently honored by Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc. (ABC) Keystone Chapter with a LEED Green Excellence Award for their work on Schindler Elevator Corporation’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Hanover, PA.

The 150,000 square-foot building opened in February 2014 and was the first elevator manufacturing plant in North America to receive LEED Gold green building certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“Our team at Conewago is proud to have helped transform Schindler’s vision to reality for a world-class manufacturing facility that reflects their commitment to sustainability and environmentally-friendly business practices,” said Donald Smith, Jr., President of Conewago Enterprises, Inc. “We expect that more manufacturers throughout the region will continue to follow Schindler’s lead in realizing the business and environmental benefits of LEED certification.”

Leaders from Conewago and Schindler received the award at ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards Gala on July 16, 2014.

Conewago handled construction on a design/build basis for the project. Schindler’s Hanover facility achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. The new factory features a number of notable sustainability elements such as a 665 kilowatt, 2,176 solar panel installation, an innovative “zero discharge” water system and two electric vehicle charging stations – the first in the Hanover area. In addition, Conewago was also able to recycle over 95% of the construction waste on the project.

Conewago’s ability to self-perform many of the critical elements of the project and experience in LEED building practices helped the firm complete construction quickly. The construction process took a total of 8 months and went from initial discussions with Schindler to completed project in less than a year.

“We help our customers achieve their green building and sustainability goals in projects around the world every day, but our new Hanover facility is another example of how Schindler is truly embracing sustainability in our own business as well,” said Jakob Zueger, CEO, Schindler Americas. “We congratulate Conewago Enterprises on this honor and thank them for their outstanding work on this project.”
