RICS Americas Summit construction/FM offerings to include project controls, public sector asset management

DC2016 to convene in April at Reagan Building

By RICS | March 10, 2016

Washington, D.C., February 22 – RICS’ 2016 Summit of the Americas, to convene April 3-5 in Washington, D.C., will include a major focus on construction and facilities management, with many professionals in those fields expected to attend and several highly relevant sessions.

In particular, DC2016 will feature in-depth panel discussions on managing public sector assets and on project controls, both on April 4. At “Public Sector Asset Management,” we will unveil the results of a wide-ranging global research project on good practices that drew on heads of public assets at a number of national and state governments around the world. Panelists will includeSoroya Perez Munguia, president of INDAABIN, Mexico’s equivalent of the U.S.’ General Services Administration; and James Balocki, facilities chief for the U.S. Army Reserve Command. It was Balocki’s call at last year’s RICS Summit of the Americas, LA2015, for the private sector for input on effectively managing public assets that spurred this research effort.

“Project Controls: How to mitigate risk and manage projects” will discuss the results of a wide-ranging consultation that RICS is holding with clients of the profession on expectations and experiences of good practice project controls. The panel discussion will begin with a presentation on the findings from an industry paper, followed by a lively debate among in-house clients on how the profession can remain cutting edge in managing risks, time and cost for capital projects. The panel will include Martin Darley, immediate past president of AACE International, and Chris Carson, director of program & project controls at Arcadis, and will be moderated by Mike Davis, vice president of construction claims for Hill International.

Attendees also will have the option of taking one of several relevant tours on Monday, April 4, including the U.S. Capitol Building, the Marriott Marquis Hotel, the D.C. Southwest Waterfront development project, and renovation of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum.

In addition, this RICS Americas Summit will serve as the first-ever “World Built Environment Forum,” modeled on the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland. As the World Built Environment Forum, it will pull together key market-movers in the built environment from around the globe to lead on major issues of the day, with a cross-sector and forward-looking perspective.  And it will feature an enhanced speakers program; multiple launches of major research and market insight pieces; and a greater examination of the intersection and interaction between the built environment and broader world.
