Ricketts drop the ball on Wrigley Field renovation, but game’s not over

Nov. 23, 2010

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts seeks government help to renovate Wrigley Field, a move derided by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, editorial pages, and callers to sports talk radio. Ricketts proposes to use 35 years of any growth in existing annual amusement taxes the team pays to support a $200 million bond-driven renovation, but critics see this as private enterprise taking from the city revenue that is needed elsewhere.
