Massachusetts Maritime Academy is located in a flood zone on Cape Cod, which restricts its potential building area. To provide MMA more dormitory rooms and cadet amenities, the Building Team, led by Prellwitz Chilinski Associates and Shawmut Design and Construction, reorganized five interconnected buildings, bolted a six-story wing onto an existing building, and added 300 beds to the campus. The two-story “overbuild” employed block and plank construction with drag strut detailing to connect it to the existing building.
Construction took three years—and 11 permits—to complete. Work could only be done in the summer or during the 10 weeks of winter when cadets were training at sea.
A new glass entrance and connector space consolidates student services into one location. A skylit boardwalk leads to 12 social spaces, a fitness center, offices, a mess deck with 200 seats, and a 100-seat dining lounge.
