Famous Fish Market Keeps Cool with Metal Panels

Fulton Fish Market, the nation's oldest and largest wholesale fish market, relocated last year from its original site on Manhattan Island, N.Y., where it had operated since 1835, to a new 400,000-sf facility in the Bronx's Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. The new facility utilizes 532,000 sf of Metl-Span CF42 panels for walls, interior partitions, and coolers, and 161,000 sf of Metl-Span CFR42 panels on its roof. The central corridor of the $85 million, 1,300-foot-long facility is lined with open display cases and coolers for vendors.

"The entire, enormous building is basically a refrigerator designed to maintain 45 degrees," said architect Martin Cybul of Cybul & Cybul Architects, Edgewater, N.J., the project designer. "The panels were integral to the design and they also provided increased R-value and a self-cleaning surface that was critical to the environment."

Cybul said the metal skin provided significant cost savings and allowed the project to be finished on budget.

Water-Tough Coatings are a Perfect Fit for a New Mexico Brewery

When Rod Tweet, owner of the Second Street Brewery in Santa Fe, N.M., was looking for floor and wall coatings to protect his new 1,200-sf brewery addition, he knew he needed a product that could stand up to wash-downs and excessive moisture common in breweries.

"A challenge with floor coatings in breweries is that you don't want them 100% smooth because then they become too slick to walk on," said Tweet. "But you don't want too much texture because then they are hard to clean."

Tweet ultimately decided to use International Coatings' ICO Quartz on the floor and ICO Quartz Cove mix for the transition from floor to wall to provide a seamless, durable, and easily maintained floor coating. For the walls, Tweet chose ICO Glaze wall coating, which dries to a high-gloss, ceramic-like finish impervious to liquid and vapor transmission. School Gets a View

Seeking an out-of-the-ordinary design for its new Roger Ludlowe Middle School in Fairfield, Conn., the school district picked Perkins Eastman Architects view- and light-enhancing plan—a long L-shaped building constructed onto a hillside—from a field of competitors. To collect reflected light, classrooms were equipped with 11-foot floor-to-ceiling Signature Series windows supplied by Moduline Window Systems. Fans Keep Kennel in the Green

In a 6,000-sf boarding kennel, finding a way to create clean, cheap, and energy-efficient airflow is a pesky but necessary concern. The owners of Pet Camp, a San Francisco kennel, were looking for a solution to replace the 15 small fans they had mounted on walls and high poles when they stumbled across Big Ass Fans in Lexington, Ky. Two 20-foot Powerfoil fans, which create a gentle breeze throughout the building, were installed to replace the noisy, harsh, and uneven airflow produced by the kennel's existing fans. The new fans are made of 10 extruded hollow-core aluminum blades set to spin slowly at the ceiling, pushing a column of air down to the floor where it radiates outward until it hits a wall or another air column. Then the air is pushed upward toward the ceiling and back down through the fan's blades for another trip through the facility. Weather Center Gets Massive Green Roof

With a goal of emphasizing open space and concealing the appearance of the vastly subterranean National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration headquarters in Suitland, Md., the facility's designers turned to Henry Company's 790-11 Green Roof Waterproofing Membrane. The 130,000-sf building envelope system protects more than $50 million in ultra-modern weather forecasting equipment and $3 billion in satellites, and is one of the largest green roof projects on the East Coast. Liquid-applied Henry Company Air-Bloc 33, unique for its ability to survive under direct sunlight, was also applied as an ultra-violet-resistant air barrier membrane integrated into the building's visible rainscreen wall cladding assembly. Residential and Retail Giant Gleams

Located in a trendy Atlanta neighborhood, the newly constructed mixed-use Plaza Midtown needed to shine. So more than 53,000 sf of silver metallic Alucobond Plus Material was installed by subcontractor Miller-Clapperton Partnership of Austell, Ga. Rather than creating a typical, tense shelter experience for potential pet adopters at the Humane Society of San Antonio and Baxter County, Mangold Roofing & Sheet Metal of San Antonio installed more than 20,000 sf of 24-gauge Galvalume Plus 16-inch SNAP-CLAD roof panels to fashion a warm, friendly environment which they hope people will enjoy visiting.
