Beachfront property gets long-overdue restoration

Built in 1973 on the beach on Ft. Lauderdale's internationally famous Galt Ocean Mile, the popular 370-unit Playa del Mar condo building had fallen prey to years of water intrusion and neglect. The structure had not been painted in 14 years, leaving much of the façade cracked and many of the balconies of the main 27-story tower and two 16-story wings damaged from corrosion. SRI Consulting Engineers of Boca Raton, Fla., specified several products from Sto to repair and restore the exterior. The balconies were restored using three Sto mortar repair products: Sto Extended Full-Depth Repair Mortar, Sto Full-Depth Repair Mortar CI, and Sto Overhead Mortar. Once repaired, the balconies were sprayed with Decocoat, Sto's sprayable decorative coating. Lotusan paint, named for the moisture-shedding properties of the plant, was specified for the main tower façade, and Sto's Powerwall stucco got the nod for the preliminary repairs to the same.
