Perkins+Will has been selected to design a mixed-use development adjacent to the Istanbul New Airport, reports ArchDaily.
The 1,700-acre (or 690-hectare) plan, named "Airport City," will have hotels, retail and commercial office space, a convention center, and metro rail connections to Istanbul and elsewhere. It will also contain a “central innovation district” and public space.
No renderings have been released yet. Perkins+Will is expected to design the center within the next four months so ground can break in 2016.
“The opportunity to lay the groundwork for a development of this magnitude is both a tremendous honor and responsibility,” said David Green, EMEA Urban Design Lead at Perkins+Will. “Istanbul’s new airport will serve millions of passengers, but its airport city will be key to capturing that vitality. Beyond simply supporting aviation, our plan will create a framework for a truly unique center of economic, cultural, and social life.”
