New facility at Virginia Tech promotes cutting-edge research

By Leslie Streicher, Associate Editor | August 17, 2011

The new $24-million Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, was designed by SmithGroup in collaboration with Skanska USA Building and Risk Venture. The three-story, 42,190-sf facility has laboratories for high-impact research, lab support, faculty offices, and collaboration areas, all dedicated to promoting research in engineering and the sciences. A modern interpretation of the university’s Collegiate Gothic style, the facility strives for environmentally stable practices, incorporating rain gardens, recycled construction materials, and a heat recovery system in the design. The building is expected to achieve LEED Gold.
