The local business campus Pop Brixton, made of 50 recycled shipping containers, recently opened in London. According to Jetson Green, the complex is home base for independent startups and small businesses from the area.

Project managers estimate that the new campus will create approximately 200 jobs, support 80 local entrepreneurs, and create 12 apprenticeships, which are being paid by the London Living Wage.

The shipping container village was designed by Carl Turner Architects. The containers will be the main building blocks and house the businesses. Pop Brixton will also have workshop space and an events room with seating for more than 200 people.

To create the event space, shipping containers were stacked three high with floors and ceilings removed to create an open space, which will be available for rent or for free to local people, artists, and organizations upon the complex's opening.

Building with shipping containers not as eco-friendly as it seems

With millions of shipping containers lying empty at ports around the world, it may seem like repurposing them to construct buildings would be a clear environmental winner. The reality of building with shipping containers is complicated, though, and in many cases isn’t a net-positive for the environment, critics charge, according to a report by NPR's Chloe Veltman.
