ICC asks Congress to help jurisdictions better enforce building codes

By Anne Hartman, Editorial Intern | August 11, 2010

The International Code Council has proposed a grant program to Congress that would provide funding to improve community code enforcement capabilities. The Community Building Code Administration Grant Program would give grants to building departments to better ensure local codes are being followed. The funding would provide opportunities to invest in additional equipment, staff, training, and other code enforcement needs, International Code Council CEO Rick Weiland said. ICC officials say the program would be particularly beneficial for communities facing natural disasters, which would see reduced damage to buildings as a result of having more code-built structures.
